The Van der Valk Hotel Ultrecht in Ultrecht, Netherlands, recently completed an extensive renovation creating a sleek, modern new look with city center accents throughout. From hall names to wall hangings, the hotel celebrates Ultrecht’s city center. The only problem is the hotel resides on the outskirts of town, not in its center. The solution: a virtual city center view from the hotel’s elevators. Unveiled July 14, and created by cinematographer Robbert Vogtländer, along with computer animation-studio Happy Ship, Hotel Ultrecht now features elevators that travel from the basement to 20th floor, allowing guests to jump out of the water of the Oude Gracht, hover past the Dom Tower cathedral, watch birds fly and wind rock the leaves, and the earth move under the sun with the same accuracy as the clock on the Dom.
New Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson stopped in Miami, Florida, recently as part of a listening and learning tour, which included visiting a local affordable housing complex. The tour, which was locally important, became national news when Carson got stuck in the facility’s elevator for 20 minutes. As firefighters worked to free him from the elevator, which they did without incident, former NBA star Alonzo Mourning and others waited outside with encouraging words, like, “Don’t worry. You’re not going to run out of air.”
In January, brave guests to Disney’s California Adventure amusement park took their last elevator trip aboard the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the thrill ride famous for its erratic, heart-dropping freefalls and iconic Hollywood Tower Hotel façade. The Tower of Terror will be replaced this summer with the new Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! ride now under construction. What won’t be replaced in this new iteration is the fast-dropping elevator riders both loved and feared. Mission: Breakout! is scheduled to open in July to coincide with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2. This video provides a preview of Mission: Breakout! – its characters, storyline and new look.
